In order to have a fair idea of the quality and suitability of Shielded Cables for a particular application, you should have some knowledge regarding the process of their construction. Apparently, all the cables may look same but the internal materials and hence the characteristics of cables may differ considerably. Some of the basics regarding the materials used in the construction of Shielded Cables are discussed below.

Materials Used

Conducting Wire
Irrespective of the cable type, each cable has a conducting wire that carries the current to the electronic equipment. Usually, copper is used as the conductor. It is desirable to have conducting wire with a large area of cross section since resistance is inversely proportional to the area.

 Insulating Dielectric
An insulating dielectric is used as a covering around the conduction wire. Dielectrics are generally fabricated from a polymer called Foam Polyethylene. The density of air trapped in the dielectric is crucial in determining its insulation properties.

Protective Shield
Shield, as is clear from the name, protects the central conductor against external electromagnetic and radio frequencies. Shield can be classified into four main categories namely braided shield, spiral shield, foil shield and twisted shield. For effective protection against external environment, the shield should properly cover the conductor. Braided Shields are woven braids that are made of Copper or Aluminum. They are highly conductive and provide very high coverage to the internal conducting wire. They can be used alone or in conjunction with other shields.

Spiral shields allow more flexibility to the cable. Foil shields provide effective coverage but they are not very flexible and durable. As a result, they are generally used in combination with braided shields.

Jacket Covering
Usually Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) covering is used as the jacket in shielded cables. The role of the jacket is to provide protection against environmental factors such as corrosion, weathering, jerks, etc. Jacket covering should be tough and durable to ensure the safety of the cable.

The development and innovation in the field of technology has increased the demand of high quality data transmission over long distances. The quality of cabling determines the quality of power and signal transmission. Different types of cables are used for ensuring good quality power transmission. Other important applications of cables are telecommunication, connection of different devices and many others. The shielded power cables are widely used for ensuring a safety and effective power transmission.

The shielded cables ensure high quality data and signal transmission without any loss and alteration in data. Cross talks, which is a major snag in network transmission is reduced considerably by the use of shielded cables. A braided shield protects the transmissions that are going through the cables. The shielded cables are generally used for electromagnetic energy protection and for conduction. Ensuring no transmission loss is one of the significant features of this cabling. The growing use of the electronic devices have considerably increased the demand for shielded cables.

Three Major Types Of Shielded Cables Are Mentioned Below:

  • Fiber optic cables: The fiber optic cabling is made up of several optical fibers coated with layers of plastic. This layering protects the fibers and gives them additional strength. The fiber optic cables are used for illumination, sensors, fiber optic communication and transmission of large bandwidths over wide distances.
  • Coaxial cables: The coaxial cables consist of a conductor covered with an insulator, which is again enclosed by a conducting shield. The geometrical axis of the two conductors is same. The coaxial cables are used for the transmission of low frequency signals like radio signals. Signals of cable television and internet connections are also transmitted through the coaxial cables.
  • Building wire: The building wires are used at construction sites and are called industrial cables. Power distribution, conduction of current to different appliances and branch distribution are some significant functions of these wires.

A shielded power cable consists of minimum one insulated conductor. It is in the form of a conductive layer. The shield has a metallic form covered up by a jacket. The metallic shield is a conducting polymer or a metal tape, which may be braided or non-braided. The shielded cabling has a broad variety of applications in the domestic as well as the commercial sector. The fiber optic cables and coaxial cables have a wide range of applications in the fast developing technological world.
